You can feel it in the air…It’s a subtle, yet potent shift. The breath of spring is sweet, fuller, more alive. Despite all the ways humanity succeeds at destruction, it cannot halt the wonder and beauty of the seasons of the earth, and the undeniable magic. We are directly opposite Samhain - the Witch’s New Year - the celebration drawing us into the darkness and shadows, into relationship with grief and death and then arriving darkness of winter. The veil was virtually nonexistent and the worlds between the living and the dead merged. Now opposite Samhain, we are invited to grow outward - into blossoming, connection, passion, and the irresistible vibration of life returning. A Celtic fire festival, Beltane sits between the Spring and Summer Equinox, when the belly of the earth is fertile and swelling and the land is no longer simply waking, but is fully alive. Folklore says it is a time that the veil is again open, closing to the ancestors that have guided us through the dark of winter, and now open to the Fae returning to bring their playfulness, passion, lust, trickery, magic and beauty back to the earth. It is believed that when a Hawthorn is planted on a hillside above running water, it creates a gateway for the Fae, so we leave offerings of milk and sweets under our hillside hawthorn tree and welcome the play of the coming months humming with life.
